Serious Fun Mondays support summer learning
TOPEKA, Kansas – Local organizations are collaborating this summer to provide a free summer lunch and learning program to Topeka children. Serious Fun Mondays are held every Monday from June 4 to August 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Raise Kansas, a local coalition of women dedicated to reducing the number of hungry kids in Shawnee County, is the primary organizer of the event and provides free books to children who come. Kansas Action for Children is the sponsor of Raise Kansas. Hy-Vee provides free, healthy sack lunches. The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center provides educators and toys for hands-on-learning.
“One in five kids in Shawnee County lives in poverty,” said Ximena Garcia, founder of Raise Kansas. “Many live with families that find themselves without enough food, particularly over the summer. Serious Fun Mondays help us reduce hunger, and just as important, give children opportunities to play and learn.”
